Background
The 4th
International APMRN Conference was held at the Richmonde Hotel in
Manila on 19-21 March, 2001. It was organised by the Philippines
Migration Research Network. The Conference was attended by APMRN
members, scholars from North America and representatives of
international organisations, including UNESCO, and NGOs. The APMRN
Secretariat at the University of Wollongong wishes to acknowledge the
excellent organisation of this Conference by the PMRN.
Following
the Conference a decision was made to publish a selected sample of
papers for distribution to the wider community. The PMRN selected
eleven papers that covered the four main themes of the Conference:
Migration trends in the Asia Pacific region; implications of these
trends for the nation states; the role of ethnic minorities in
receiving societies, and policy strategies for addressing migration
outcomes. This publication includes seven of these papers and the
remaining four have been incorporated into the APMRN book that is
currently being published by Edward Elgar, UK and USA. The role of the
PMRN throughout this process is gratefully acknowledged.
The
designations employed, and the presentation of material throughout this
publication, do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on
the part of the UNESCO Secretariat concerning the legal status of any
county, territory, city, or area of its authorities, or the
